Backup & Disaster Recovery (DR)

Protect enterprise applications, persistent storage volumes, and database clusters with Nife's automated backup schedules, cross-region replication, and instant disaster recovery failover.

Core Capabilities

  • Automated Persistent Volume Snapshots: Incremental snapshots captured at block level with zero application downtime.
  • Configurable Retention Policies: Define retention windows (7 daily, 4 weekly, 12 monthly snapshots) with automated pruning.
  • Cross-Region Replication: Asynchronously replicate volume snapshots to secondary edge regions or external object storage (AWS S3, GCP Cloud Storage, Azure Blob).
  • Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR): Restore database states and persistent data volumes to any specific minute within the retention window.
  • Automated Failover Orchestration: Define Recovery Point Objectives (RPO < 5 min) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO < 60 sec) for zero-data-loss failover.

Setting Up an Automated Backup Schedule

  1. Navigate to Governance → Backup & DR in the Nife console.
  2. Select your target workload, database, or attached persistent volume.
  3. Click Configure Backup Policy.
  4. Define your schedule:
    • Frequency: Hourly, Daily, or Custom Cron expression.
    • Retention Rule: Set the number of retention snapshots to preserve before automatic rotation.
    • Replication Target: Select the secondary disaster recovery region.
  5. Click Save Policy.

Disaster Recovery & Instant Restoration

In the event of a catastrophic regional outage or accidental data corruption:

  1. Open Governance → Backup & DR → Snapshots.
  2. Locate the most recent healthy snapshot for your application.
  3. Click Restore Snapshot.
  4. Choose restoration mode:
    • In-Place Restore: Replaces the existing volume state while restarting container pods.
    • Fork / Clone Restore: Provisions a new independent volume with the snapshot data for testing and forensic audit.
  5. Confirm the action. Traffic routing automatically health-checks the restored volume before resuming public requests.
